Do you think you have the absolute best recipe for apple pie?

Maybe your neighbor claims to make the best meatloaf around. Did your Italian grandmother serve the best spaghetti sauce this side of the Atlantic? Well, unless you or that neighbor or your grandmother is Ann Hodgman, you’re wrong.

In this revised edition more than 50 of recipes are completely new, and many of the originals have been “oomphed up” to make them even more shamelessly delicious.

Beat This! Cookbook contains more than a hundred all-time favorites, from Burnt Sugar Ice Cream and White Chocolate Raspberry Pie to Chili-Cheese Casserole and Onion Rings. Each one is guaranteed to make people take a bite, stagger with joy, and beg you for the recipe.

Sure it’s 100 degrees outside, but these lemon cooler cupcakes will make it feel like 98. With the weather this hot you might think about picking up unfrosted cupcakes from the bakery or grocery store for your decorating projects. We call ahead and ask if they have “naked cupcakes.” That always gets a laugh. We did a taste test at several local bakeshops and grocery store bakeries and now we know where we can get great-tasting unfrosted cupcakes for decorating without having to crank up the oven. In the Technique of the Month you can see how we keep our edge, using craft scissors to create the serrated mint leaves on the coolers. This month’s Candy Corner takes a closer look at some fantastic stick gum colors that can be used for decorating.

Happy cupcaking.

Congratulations to Elly Griffiths for winning the Mary Higgins Clark Award at this year's Edgars!

The night before last, the Mystery Writers of America celebrated agents, editors, and writers everywhere with its annual pre-Edgars “Agents and Editors Party” at the Lighthouse in NYC. Included in the festivities was the presentation of the Mary Higgins Clark Award, which honors books that feature a female protagonist who isn't looking for trouble but finds it and solves it herself. It’s no surprise, then, that this year’s winner is our Elly Griffiths for her much-loved, quirky forensic archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway in THE CROSSING PLACES!

Two of the best-known names in birding—Peterson and Bird Watcher’s Digest —team up again to provide expert advice on attracting, feeding, and identifying hummingbirds and butterflies.

Hummingbirds and butterflies are some of the most beautiful visitors to a backyard, but they can also be some of the most elusive. This second collaboration between  the Peterson Field Guide  series and Bird Watcher’s Digest  includes tips on how to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to backyards—and how to identify them once they’ve arrived. Bill Thompson III and Connie Toops have decades of firsthand experience and have written the book in a fun, lighthearted style, providing both amateur and veteran nature watchers with need-to-know information, including where hummingbirds and butterflies live, what they eat, and the best garden plants to attract them. The species profiles of the 15 most common hummingbirds and 40 most common butterflies serve as a field guide, showing ranges, identifying marks, and preferred habitats. Full-color photographs and detailed drawings make attracting, identifying, and feeding these colorful creatures a snap.

This hilarious and heartwrenching novel follows eleven-year-old Harri Opuku, recently immigrated from Ghana to the rough housing projects of London, as he tries to navigate inner-city life.

Read Pigeon English for yourself and see why Harrison Opuku is bo-styles. How being the fastest runner in Year 7 makes him dope-fine. And why, when a hutious criminal feels Harri closing in on him, it just feels crazy. You'll want this book to last donkey hours. Trust me.
