Cathy you speak from total ignorance about the subject of addiction. My family IS from the east coast and my son is presently in treatment for cocaine and meth usage. My son is bright, intelligent, loving, caring, sensitve, funny, polite, spiritual and he possesses so many other wonderful qualities. Sadly, he also battles drug addiction. His drug addiction is only one part of him and it breaks my heart that people like you only see the drug addiction and don't see the whole person. It appears from your harsh judgement towards Nic and others with addictions (& their families) that you see yourself as the god you accused them of being. You ask why families should be put thru the torture of bailing out 'these morons' - my son has always taken full responsibility for his addiction AND his recovery. As his family we continue to love HIM completely and support his efforts in recovery - we don't 'catch' him and we don't make excuses for his actions - we hold him accountable for his actions. Yes, our family has experienced some difficult times connected to this addiction, but if I had to live those all over again or live without my son, I would live them all over again and again and again. Too bad that COMPASSION isn't one of the Yankee values that you possess. By the way, my son, like your children, has been instilled with the value of hard work - he not only goes to school, but he also holds down a job. Congratulations on being so perfect that you are able to cast stones. Nic Sheff has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder - perhaps that is the reason he turned to drugs in the first place. Instead of being so judgemental, lets increase our understanding of mental illness and addiction and improve the care we offer to those who suffer.
