Our goal in Electronic Reference Licensing is to provide you with state-of-the art, customizable products that will meet or exceed your standards and result in speedy time to market. We use the most up-to-date methods in structuring data. Works for licensing are usually structured in XML with accompanying XSL Stylesheets and are provided with DTDs, entity lists, in many cases inflected form indexes, and in some cases audio pronunciation and art files. For some of our less complicated books we provide files in SGML with entity lists and DTDs. We can customize our dictionary files also by making them smaller to fit your product and by outputting them in other formats such as text or spreadsheet.

A number of our dictionaries are available in a special Filter XML version. The Houghton Mifflin dictionaries start out in several XML formats, each tailored to the authoring and publishing needs of that specific work. Transforming this XML to HTML has traditionally required a new set of conversion tools for each dictionary. If a new final format (PDF, HTML with specialized templates) was needed for five dictionaries, five sets of conversion tools had to be altered.

The Master Elements format provides a single starting point for dictionary transformations. Each dictionary is delivered in a common XML format. Tools to create a final format are provided; these tools can be used as-is, or altered by the customer to produce the desired output. When a transformation tool is complete, it can be applied to any other dictionary in Master Elements format. Thus adding a new dictionary doesn't involve starting the entire development process from scratch. To change a display or output parameter for five dictionaries, one stylesheet file is changed, then applied to each dictionary. This process can be added to an automated building and testing environment.
