Frequently Asked Questions

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 4th Edition: CD-ROM

1) Do I have to keep the CD in the drive to run the program?

The default installation reads all data off the CD. However, if you have enough free disk space (600 MB), you can transfer all this data to your hard drive by following these instructions.

2) Every time I enter a word into the search box the software says, "Sorry, this word was not found in the dictionary."

The default installation reads off the CD-ROM, so you will need to put the CD back in the drive or reinstall the software according to these instructions. You will need ~600 MB of free space.

3) I followed the instructions given here, but still get the message "Sorry, this word was not found in the dictionary."

If you have Norton AntiVirus please disable this product before installing the dictionary software.

4) I have Chinese or Korean Windows and I see Chinese or Korean characters/letters in place of the pronunciation symbols.

Your Windows operating system is set up to display these characters instead of the pronunciation symbols. Follow these steps to change this Microsoft Windows setting:

1. Click Start, Run, and type "regedit." Hit OK.
2. Browse to Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\fontassoc\Associated Charset
3. On the left hand side, you will see: ANSI(00)
4. Set the value to "no."
5. Close Regedit.

5) I cannot view all the Indo-European or Semitic roots. I have Windows XP.

Download these 2 files: [AHDTalk.dll and CNSdict.dll]. Search for and replace all instances of these files on your hard drive. Restart your computer.

6) When I right-click a word in MS Word, I do not see a menu choice for "American Heritage Dictionary." I have Microsoft Word 2000 or XP.

A. If you also have Windows 2000 or XP: Find ahdlookup.dot on the CD-ROM. Copy this file to C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup. Set your "Macro Security" level in Office to Medium or Low. Restart your computer.

B. If you have Windows 95 or 98: Find ahdlookup.dot on the CD-ROM. Copy this file to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\Startup. Set your "Macro Security" level in Office to Medium or Low. Restart your computer.

7) I want to set "Macro Security" to High, but this prevents the AHD macro from running.

Download this replacement file [AHDLookup.dot] and replace your current copy. Open Microsoft Word. When prompted, check the box for "Always Trust This Source" and click "Enable."

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language with Complete Thesaurus, 4th Edition: CD-ROM

When I open the CD application, the pronunciation symbols look like garbage symbols.

To properly view our AHD CD, you need the Minion font. Click below to download the font and drag it onto your font folder.

The Encyclopedia of World History, 6th Edition: CD-ROM

1) Can I get this CD-ROM in Macintosh format?

We do not have a version of the CD-ROM in Macintosh format.

2) During installation, at the screen where I choose the installation location, the install seems to freeze.

Occasionally it can take over a full minute to progress to the next screen.
