June 29, 1999
A visual exploration of the improbable
June 29, 1999, which happens to be a
Tuesday, is a day no one will forget, especially the residents of
Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, and in particular Holly Evans. On that day,
Holly, her town, and the country learn the results of her
science project, sending seedlings aloft into the ionosphere: An
invasion of giant vegetables. Broccoli falls from the sky, bracing
itself in her back yard; turnips hit the trail in the Rocky Mountains;
and lima beans land in Levittown. Holly never imagined the results
would be so unprecedented in scale or so fantastical in scope. Wiesners
wit and superbly detailed illustrations make it all seem somehow
plausible.
Reviews
*The
photorealistic quality of the figures and background vistas only
underscores the absurdity of the gigantic airborne produce and accentuates
the deadpan humor.

*Wiesner
once again presents an offbeat premise and unconventional artwork
to tempt youngsters into his deliciously skewed landscapes. . .
. Wiesners dry humor, irony and artistic wizardry have been
masterfully marshalled into a visual and literary feast. . . . Spectacular
to look at, great fun to readit is, in sum, executed with
consummate skill.
Publishers Weekly, starred review
Reality and fantasy humorously collide
in Wiesners newest picture book. . . . What child can resist
so bizarre a notion as waking up to find broccoli in the back yard
and space aliens in the sky, especially when the images are delivered
with such glee and in such glorious photographic detail?
